Inspired by the wonderful success of the PBS series Austin City Limits, the producers of the series, ‘C3 Presents’ along with the City of Austin, Texas, decided to turn this T.V. production into an actual outdoor annual Music Festival held over two consecutive Weekends at Zilker Park in South Austin on the riverfront. Over 100,000 thousand people attend this Festival each year and it continues in popularity.
One of the unique characteristics of this of this event is that there are no less than eight different stages set up around the park grounds to cater to the variety of genres of music. Country, Rock, Jazz, Pop, Hip Hop and Folk music are all well represented, as well as many other styles. Literally, there is something for everyone. The Festival is designed to be fun, safe and family friendly; thus far it has achieved these objectives beyond expectations.
The inaugural Festival began in 2002 as a two-day event and hosted 67 Bands on five stages where 25,000 people attended and has grown into to the spectacular two-weekend Celebration you see today. the Festival has become so popular, even Internationally, that a new ‘Auckland City Limits’ in New Zealand was announced to debut in 2016 at Western Springs Stadium. The City of Austin has also enjoyed the economic benefit of hosting such a festival bringing in tourist dollars from around the world. The Festival Grounds host Arts and Crafts displays and vendors of most anything you could think but, music is the focal point.
Over the years, the list of performers at Austin City Limits include some of the greatest musicians and artists of all times. Some of the performances have become legendary such as Stevie Ray Vaughn playing the Blues right before he died while on tour from a Helicopter crash. The Dave Matthews Band, Sheryl Crow, R.E.M., The Eagles, Willie Nelson and Van Morrison are just a few more examples, the list is long.
